Collegiate athletic signers

Louisburg High School has a rich tradition of athletics, and more than that, a tradition of students earning athletic scholarships. This year we have multiple in football and soccer and several strewn throughout other sports as well. Success on and off the field is not something that they think came easy to them. The overwhelming theme that the three athletes who signed, outside of football and soccer, was that it took lots of hard work and time to earn these scholarships.

The first athlete is Kade Larson who signed to Coffeyville for baseball. Larson has played baseball for as long as he can remember, but it wasn’t always his favorite or best sport.

“I really liked football in middle school because I was bigger and faster than most kids,” Larson, senior, said.

He still may be bigger than most kids at 6’3” 280 pounds, but his favorite sport is no longer football. Larson has always had a love for baseball but didn’t quite understand how fun it could be until high school ball with his friends.

“High school baseball was where I really found out that I love the sport, I just had so much fun with my teammates, and this year it became a reality that I was going to keep getting to play,” Larson said.

The next athlete is Brook Vaughan who signed play basketball at Iowa Western. Vaughan has known since middle school that playing basketball in college is her dream. She is a bit undersized for collegiate basketball at only 5’6”.

“I have always known that I am going to be shorter than most other players, especially in college, so I’ve worked extremely hard on my shooting and ball-handling skills to make up for that,” Vaughan, senior, said.

Vaughan signed fairly recently which was a large weight off her shoulders. She is very excited at the opportunity to get to work.

“Iowa Western seems like a great place and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to show my talent,” Vaughan said.Last but not least is Nate O’Brien who has signed with Johnson County Community College for pole vaulting. He is ready to get to work both in school and on the field.

“I am excited because it is free education for at least two years and maybe I will get

the opportunity to go somewhere else and earn a scholarship,” O’Brien, senior, said.

O’Brien has always enjoyed track but never necessarily saw it as a future hope.

“If vaulting is my path then I am okay with that because I enjoy track and it gives me
free education,” O’Brien, said.

All-in-all, this is a great year for Louisburg’s student athletes. Next year’s students hope to continue the tradition of success.
